BA(Hons) Fine Art ( Drawing and Painting)
Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee.

In making my work, I immerse myself in the landscape to experience and feel it rather than just a clinical depiction of a view. I become involved in the atmosphere of the place and endeavour to portray the peace and solitude which it evokes in me alongside the drama and mood.

Often a subtle change of light, wind or even the turn of the tide, can transform the landscape.
My work evolves and develops from my emotive response to a particular point in time, in a particular place. Often too, other influences come into play, for example - if there is a human footprint which has had a lasting impression on the land.........

I draw on memory, sketches, and my emotional response to create my work. Primarily though it starts and ends with an intuitive reaction to the elements that construct the landscape. Often too, other things which evoke imagery can initiate an idea for a painting, such as poetry, stories etc.
This 'involvement' in my subject matter can lead to the viewer feeling they are somehow 'in the picture' in many cases.

We have intense depth of colour as well as contrasts of shape and tone in our spectacular Scottish landscape. I am endlessly inspired by each new image brought by the combination of season, weather, light and mood. I enjoy the challenge of painting the contrasting landscapes of both the west and the east coast of Scotland - living on the East now,I am still primarily drawn to the West Highlands which are so much an integral part of who I am and I hope this is evident in the work I produce.

Originally from Lochailort in Moidart - a beautiful and rugged part of the West Highlands; I have had a passion for visual art from a young age- painting and depicting the dramatic landscapes, skyscapes, weather and seascapes which have evoked an emotional and creative response from artists, poets, photographers, authors, philosophers and others over many centuries. It is a unique part of the world which captures the imagination of those who allow themselves to be influenced by it.
